Winslow Homer (1836-1910) |
| Winslow Homer (1836-1910) is celebrated as an icon in American painting, with critics and collectors paying particular attention to his seascapes in watercolor. No less inspiring are the more than 200 wood engravings he produced as a freelance ilustrator for Harper's Weekly and Ballou beginning in the late 1850's. Harper's hired Homer to journey to the Civil War fronts and send back scenes for its readership; some of his most well-known illustrations depict not the "glory" of battle but its furor, and the monotonous and mundane life of a soldier when not actively at war. Yellowhouse Gallery offers a broad spectrum of antique prints published during his 20-year career as an illustrator. |
